"If you decide to become captain you're taking on a responsibility," he said. ![]() He also thinks the captain and only the captain is responsible for paying the forfeit. "And if for some reason we do have to forfeit, all of us will chip in."Įduardo Hariton, a 19-year-old pre-med student and captain of a men's intramural indoor-soccer team, supports the penalty because it means more games and more playtime. "I trust my team enough to show up," he said. No team has forfeited a second game at this time.Īlex Mendoza, a 21-year-old history major and captain of a men's intramural basketball team, doesn't think the fee is that big a deal. "Opponents would show up and not have a game to play."ĭefaults, situations where a team didn't have to formally forfeit if they had half the team present plus one additional person, have been done away with, he said. "An average of about 25 percent of games were being forfeited or defaulted," Falkenstein said. The fee also will help recuperate costs and will be used to improve the program through things like employee development events and guest speakers. The Recreational Board of Directors decided to implement the charge mainly to deter teams from forfeiting, Falkenstein said. The captain is only charged once though, and a second forfeit results in being dropped from the league. Team captains will be charged $30 to their student accounts if the team doesn't have the minimum number of players to begin a game, and they automatically lose the match, said Marc Falkenstein, coordinator of intramural sports. Students who are captains of a University of Florida intramural sports teams will have to come up with forfeit charges if enough players don't show up for games starting Summer A.
